Re-invent Yourself This Fall with These Sustainable Fashion Tips

Re-inventing your fall style can be challenging, but here are some sustainable tips to achieve a new you this autumn season.

The autumn season always marks the beginning of a desire for newness, both within myself and within my fall style.

I associate the fall with this feeling of “new-ness” since it’s when a new school year starts. You’d spend the summer thinking about you might reinvent yourself for the upcoming year with a new haircut and a new style.

While grade school feels like a lifetime ago, that feeling of needing to reinvent myself with a new identity and new fashions for Fall is still with me.

I’ve dedicated this post to some share some tips on creating a Fall wardrobe that can sustain many seasons- as well as identity crises.

1. Shop your closet

When the seasons change, I switch out the items in my closet from Spring/Summer to Fall/Winter.

This is indeed to save space, but also because my clothes feel like new again if I haven’t seen them in a while.

Book off a Friday night for yourself at home, get your tunes going and a glass (or two) of bubble and shop your closet. Try on different things, in different combinations- you’ll surprise yourself at the new life your old clothes can take on.

Pro tip: Take pictures of the outfits so you remember what looks cute. I like to use the notes app on my phone to add pictures and give context to where I might wear each outfit.

2. Alterations

Trends come and go, and so do your preferences. You might love a dress you bought 5 years ago, but it doesn’t really seem modern anymore or suit your style.  Alterations are a great way to change up your clothes to feel new again. I recently had several dresses shortened (including the one here) to change the way I style them.

3. New Accessories

Something small can be key to make an outfit feel fresh again! A new hat, a pair of tights can make you excited about your clothes again.

Is there anything worse than buying a fab pair of patterned tights only to have them rip while pulling them up?! My favorite tights brand is  Calzedonia – I can wash and wear them many times and they never rip.

4. A New Do

Never underestimate the power of hair and makeup. As the seasons change and our tans fade, we are all left looking and feeling like the walking dead. This is nothing that a fresh cut & color, and a new lip color can’t fix.

Pro tip: Take your nude lip a shade darker and find a blush to match. Despite popular belief that pale skin and dark makeup is reserved for vampires, the deeper colors will actually bring some life into your pale skin.

5. Resist the Urge

Resisting the urge to follow new trends is the hardest. Most trends have a shelf life of less than one season, which actually makes them fads. While you might think it’s worth it for the likes, your wallet and closet space will thank you later. Try to only follow trends you know can fit in with the rest of your wardrobe and you’ll like forever.

Pro Tip: You don’t have to buy anything new.  Arrange a clothing swap with your friends. If you’re tired of your clothes, you know that your besties probably are too.

Being fashionable does not mean you have to follow everything style that is deemed “in”. The true test to style is making your same pieces work and re-work. Stay true to yourself and keep it fresh!
