The Hottest Color of the Season: M&M Green

This season, fashion It girls everywhere are getting their inspo from the currently-being-cancelled sexy m&m.

Finally getting her recognition as a style icon, influencers and fashion girls are sporting her signature Kelly green color and white Gogo boots, almost as if we knew her cancellation as the bombshell candy was on it’s way.

While I believe ever-more-frequently trips to the local 7/11 to cure the munchies had something to do with determining the hottest color of the season- I’ve got a few other theories why green is so hot right now.

The Psychology of the Color Green

It’s no doubt that colors evoke feelings within us and scientists have done tons of research into the psychology of colors.

Green is a cool color because it has shorter wavelengths. Colors with shorter wavelengths are soothing as our eyes don’t need to adjust to see them.

Thus, green is a relaxing and cool color. After the stress of the pandemic in the last two years, it’s no surprise that green is the style color of choice given that we all need a break from anything stress!

The color green is associated with nature. Besides the looming pandemic, you are also probably thinking the world might end thanks to climate change as well. The apocalypse actually doesn’t seem so far-fetched anywhere. Seeing green everywhere brings us back to nature and reminds us to make good choices and be good to our planet.

Green is a lucky color! We could all use a little luck of the Irish these days so it’s not surprising that we see so much green around us to lift our spirits and hope for better days.  (The Psychology of Green)

Try something bold and mix greens with purples. Green and purple are complementary colors, meaning they are opposite each other on the color wheel. Complimentary colors “compliment” each other by not competing, but allowing each to stand out equally.

Finally, you can never go wrong with black and green- a smart combination of green blouse under a blazer will be the pleasant pop you needed at the office during a gloomy winter.

So there you have it- we say RIP to the Sexy M&M just as she’s finally having her moment in fashion, Mars decided to give her a brand and style makeover. She loses her white gogo boots in favor for white sneakers, tights and sleeves. The rebrand says she is now a female leader who “hypes other women and is all about inclusivity”..

And while I am all for inclusivity, I have to wonder what the heck does wearing sneakers have to do with it? Mars says they want the characters to “focus on their personalities, not their genders” Nylon Magazine–  While I’ve seen men wear more fabulous, higher heels than the vintage green M&M, white Gogo boots actually don’t need to be a determination of someone’s gender, no clothing choice does.

Mars also says that they are hoping these changes “foster self-expression and community” Nylon Magazine Umm, seems like they seriously missed the mark on that one. Fashion is the biggest form of self-expression.

If it’s a character of a candy- it’s should be a fantasy- fashion is fantasy. And, after the last 2 years we’ve had, in our pajama zoom calls and netflix binging- doesn’t the world need a little more fantasy?

Some food for thought as I leave you with this week: What do you think of the Sexy M&M’s makeover? Can women in leadership roles care about fashion and still be taken seriously? And finally, let me know how you are styling your green pieces this season!
