Shop Your Closet: New Year’s Eve Outfits Using What You Already Have

As the countdown to the New Year begins, there’s no need to hit the stores for a last-minute outfit panic. Let your closet take center stage using what you already have.

Rework your sparkles

I know you have some kind of sparkly type, shirt or dress lurking in your closet saying “You can’t wear me again, you already wore me to New Years Eve LAST YEAR!”

The truth is, no one remembers what you wore a year ago. And if they do, that’s just weird. It’s all in our head that outfit repeating is wrong. If it was a great outfit last year, it’ll be a great outfit this year. That said, you can always get creative and rework your sparkles. Think about adding layers to add interest to your outfit: a collared shirt, a chunky knit, how about some trendy tights and heels. Try color blocking using contrasting or complimentary colors for a really punchy look. Now, change up your hair and makeup, and you’re ready to ring in the new year.

Add a fur

Whether it’s faux or real, take out your old millenial club days furry bar coat, borrow your mom’s vintage fox, or find one on your local buy & sell (someone is always selling one, I promise) and give it a night out. For a more mature look, try styling the fur with a sleek slip dress. Keep it modern with some relaxed fit jeans, paired with a sleek pair of stilettos, boots or heels- weather depending. Add a bitchy-bag, just big enough to fit your phone and a lip gloss, and you’ve reached level 10 understated fab.

Unbutton it real low

I know what you’re thinking, how can the amount of buttons buttoned be trending? Well, it is. And actually, I’m kind of obsessed. Take any collared shirt in your closet and unbutton it all the way. No, I’m not kidding. Complete the look with one of your nice bras, you know the ones that collect dust in the back of your drawer? This is your opportunity to swap out your weird, ugly grey-beige-because-you-wear-it-everyday-bra for something that makes you feel hot. Other option, nipple pasties and go braless.

Keep this look effortless with a bar of relaxed fit denim, a pair of wide-leg trousers, or a voluminous skirt. We don’t want anything too fussy on the bottom competing with the top.
