Another Pandemic Birthday & Not Giving a Hoot What People Think About You.

This last year has been a significant year for me because I’ve gotten to reconnect with my “old” self again- my true self if you will.

A strange man once came to me barefoot walking on gravel (?!) when I was just a young lady working my summer campground job (Meeting Lake Regional Park- if you know, you know). He told me that he was “intuitive” and that being 28 would be a life-changing year for me. While I do think this man was completely insane, it was such a strange experience I think about it still all these years later. Anyway, he was right about one thing because 28 was a special year for me.

The last 4 years of my life have been filled with many unexpected adventures, a lot of love and laughter, but also my fair share of disappointment and sadness. My first 3 years in Sweden were really about trying to find my new self in this new culture and how I fit in it. However, this last year has been a significant year for me because I’ve gotten to reconnect with my “old” self again- my true self, if you will.

Living Through a Global Pandemic

Watching my friends and family live in the COVID 19 pandemic through my Swedish-colored lenses has been a bizarre experience. There have been some minor inconveniences, but for the most part life in Sweden has continued as is. Every year, I write down a list of personal goals on my birthday. This past year, the pandemic actually allowed for some of my goals to take place and I am not sure they would have otherwise. For example, I had written down I wanted to commit to a ballet class. I was finally able to make this happen since I wasn’t so bogged down by long office hours- all thanks to Miss Rona, herself. Just a few short months later I was teaching classes and it has brought my life here so much joy and fulfillment.

Another goal of mine was to start a fashion blog as it was something I had really wanted to do for years. People in Sweden don’t really know this side of me because I haven’t been able to work in fashion here, but before I moved here- it was my life. This blog is a way to connect with that part of myself again. I know that there are/will be people who poke fun behind my back for it. But a wise woman (my BFF) told me: dogs don’t bark at parked cars- they only bark at cars that are moving and going somewhere.

And while I've never really been someone to care what people think about me, I have to say that this is not a typical characteristic you find in Sweden. I think it actually scares people here sometimes to see it. That said, I am completely overwhelmed by the support I've gotten for starting my blog from people that I hardly know, have just met, or people that I know from years ago who still think of me and take the time to reach out! It means you see me for the real me and you accept me. So thank you!

My birthday outfit was an ode to not giving a hoot what anyone thinks of me. A full animal print ensemble is the ultimate middle finger because it exudes confidence and commands attention. Plus, the pajama trend is so hot right now. It tells us that we are living through a new normal where business on the top & pjs on the bottom is the new casual Friday, except it’s everyday. Proof that we are living through a new era of fashion where comfort is key and caring about other people’s opinions is so 2020…

To round this off I am sharing some of my goals for being 29 with you because it means we can achieve them together. I find that “The Universe” is good to you if you write down what you really want ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. ย Work with a sustainable fashion company.
  2. ย It’s been 4 years since I saw one so this year I definitely need to attend a fashion show!
  3. ย Explore somewhere new again, even if it is close.
  4. See my baby niece at least 3 times.
  5. ย Grow as a dancer/teacher – attend a dance conference/workshop.

ย

Thanks for reading all about my dreams for the next year. Tell me, do you pick a special birthday outfit to set the tone of the upcoming year? And, how long did it take you to stop caring about what people thought about you? Maybe you still do and that is totally fine, too.

Looking forward to reading your replies!
